bookshelf -katy and the big snow

This is the book to read to the kids today. Then make snowmen... then when the snow stops, let it relax and go sledding. Full day.

Preview the fantastic, life affirming, Katy and the Big Snow here. Katy is infact based on a Gloucester (MA) Highway Department's snow plow. Author Virginia Lee Burton wrote many of her books referencing the North Shore of Massachusetts. Further reading at a great site VintageBooksMyKidsLove.

Perfect. Mike Mulligan is on heavy rotation at our house, be nice to have a bit of a respite with a winter theme.

One of my all-time favorite children's books.

I had forgotten about this book for about 30 years until this moment. I used to LOVE it as a kid growing up in Miami(!) Thank you for the memories.

Her other book is a family favorite, too. The first few digging scenes in Mike Mulligan and His Steamshovel are clearly the Cape Cod Canal, and one of several roadways built in the 1930's. The scene where he leaves the city for Poppervile shows the most accurate layout of the rural nucleated New England Village, and in perfect detail. When they build the new town hall, the post and beam construction is gorgeous, too. I love Ms. V.L.B.

My sister's name is Katherine and she was called Katy [with that spelling] growing up. This was definitely her favorite book.
